Remember when the iPhone came out? It wasn't just a phone with a touchscreen - it completely reimagined how we interact with mobile devices. We didn't just port Windows 98 to a tiny screen; we built something fundamentally different.
We're at a similar inflection point with AI. The chat interface popularized by tools like ChatGPT was revolutionary, but it's only the beginning. As I was discussing with Marko Jevremović recently, "LLMs and Deep Learning is the next UX platform and we are yet to see the real AI native apps, the ones that are designed for this medium."

History Repeating: New Technology, New Interfaces
Throughout computing history, leaps in interface design have always followed major technological breakthroughs:
- The command line gave us direct access to computing power
- GUIs brought computing to the masses with visual metaphors
- Mobile touchscreens created entirely new interaction patterns
- VR/AR is beginning to blend digital and physical worlds
Each transition didn't just make existing apps available on new hardware - it fundamentally changed how we think about software design. When smartphones emerged, the best apps weren't desktop software squeezed onto a small screen. They were completely reimagined for touch, mobility, and new sensors.
Today's AI Interface Problem
OpenAI's chat interface was revolutionary, giving everyone access to powerful language models through a familiar paradigm. But this seems to have created a lack of imagination - suddenly every AI product defaults to a chatbox.
This has limitations. As I was joking with someone recently: "We're in the great era of AI, where half of our work now is copy-pasting text from one chat to another." Not exactly the seamless future we imagined. 😅
What Will AI-Native Interfaces Look Like?
The best technology companies already understand that interfaces should adapt to user intent, not the other way around. Google shows different UI elements depending on your search—weather widgets for weather queries, movie showtimes for film searches, or data visualizations for economic questions. Similarly, Apple's ecosystem contextually shifts between experiences based on what you're doing.
These approaches preview where AI interfaces are heading. The next generation will be deeply contextual and adaptive:
1. Context-Aware Interfaces
Leading companies already show the way:
- Apple's Handoff seamlessly transitions your work between devices based on context
- Google surfaces different information cards based on search intent
- Apple's Live Text recognizes when you're looking at text in an image and offers relevant actions
AI interfaces will take this further:
- When coding, surfacing relevant documentation and debugging suggestions
- During data analysis, proposing visualizations that reveal insights
- While writing, offering tone adjustments based on your previous style and audience
As Marko explains, "A good UX actually reduces computation you have in your head to use something. That's the whole point."
2. Multi-modal Input and Output
The best interface is the one that feels most natural for the current task:
- Apple's AirPods automatically connect when in your ears, no interface needed
- Voice for quick commands (like Siri or Google Assistant while driving)
- Visual when spatial understanding matters (like Apple Maps' AR directions)
- Touch and text when precision matters (like editing documents)
These won't exist as separate modes but will flow naturally based on context, much like how Apple's ecosystem transitions between touch, voice, and traditional inputs depending on which device you're using.
3. Intent-Based Action
The future focuses on what you want to accomplish, not how:
- Apple's Shortcuts and App Intents let you express a goal ("Share my ETA") without specifying mechanics
- "Schedule a team meeting next week" might check calendars and suggest times
- "Summarize these quarterly results" could create an executive brief
- "Help me understand this error" might diagnose problems and suggest solutions
This moves beyond command-based interfaces to understanding human intentions.
4. Proactive Intelligence
The most advanced AI interfaces will anticipate needs:
- Apple's iPhone suggests apps at the right time of day based on your habits
- The Apple Watch proactively tracks workouts when it detects activity
- AI systems will notice research patterns and gather relevant resources
- They'll identify repetitive tasks and offer to automate them
- They'll prepare information before you realize you need it
The key insight from these examples is that technology should adapt to humans, not force humans to adapt to technology. As we've seen with both Apple and Google's evolution, the best interfaces become nearly invisible—they're just a natural extension of what you want to accomplish.
The Rise of the AI Agent Ecosystem
The future won't be dominated by a single AI system. Instead, we'll see an ecosystem of specialized agents working together:
- Domain-specific agents with deep expertise in particular fields
- Personal agents that understand your preferences and goals
- System agents that manage resources and coordinate activities
- Third-party agents that provide specialized services
As Niko explained in his recent post: "The world will not be just one AI agent to rule them all, it is going to be ecosystem. There will be multiple AI agents; standalone AI tools, AI agents integrated to existing tools, API only AI agents, different UI's for controlling and interacting with them."
The challenge becomes providing efficient communication between these agents - particularly sharing context. We're already seeing users manually exporting journal entries into Claude to act as a personal project manager. Soon, that context transfer will happen seamlessly through APIs and direct integrations.

Learning From the Past to Build the Future
As we design these new interfaces, we should remember lessons from previous technological shifts:

Don't just port old paradigms - Chat interfaces are familiar, but they aren't always the best solution.

Reduce cognitive load - The best interfaces feel magical because they minimize the mental effort required.

Blend new and old - Even in the touchscreen revolution, we kept keyboards. AI interfaces will similarly blend innovative and traditional elements.

Focus on outcomes, not processes - Users care about what they want to accomplish, not how the technology works.

Build for human capabilities and limitations - Interfaces should complement how people think and work, not force people to adapt to the technology.
What This Means For Users and Builders
For users, these new interfaces promise a future where technology adapts to us, rather than the other way around. Imagine software that:
- Understands your specific needs and preferences
- Anticipates what you'll need before you ask
- Handles routine tasks automatically
- Provides just the right information at just the right time
- Adapts as your needs change
For builders, this represents both a challenge and an opportunity. The winners in the AI era won't just be those with the most powerful models, but those who reimagine what software can be when AI is native to the experience.
As Arthur C. Clarke famously said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." The best AI interfaces will indeed feel magical - not because they showcase impressive technology, but because they seamlessly extend human capabilities in ways that feel natural and intuitive.
We're just at the beginning of this journey. The chat interface was our first step into a new world of possibilities. Now it's time to move beyond the chat box and build truly AI-native experiences.
